The filming location for Seacrow Island has been nominated for “Best Location – Natural” at the Global Production Awards during the Cannes Film Festival. For Stockholm Business Region, the nomination is welcome proof that the proximity between a major city and 30,000 islands is a world-class competitive advantage, including for the film industry.

– Stockholm is unique in the world. The city’s urban environments and the archipelago’s islands, with every conceivable service and infrastructure, make extraordinary locations accessible for film production all year round, says Marie Östblom, Stockholm Archipelago/Stockholm Business Region.

Film Stockholm, Stockholm Archipelago and Skärgårdsstiftelsen (the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation) have worked together for many years to attract film productions to the archipelago, through initiatives such as the project “Off Season is the Best Season to Film” and joint location tours for Swedish and international producers and location scouts. The efforts have yielded clear results, with several major productions filmed in the archipelago during 2025. The nomination for Seacrow Island (known in Sweden as Vi på Saltkråkan, filmed in 2024) is proof of that.

– It is fantastic to see the long-term collaboration between Film Stockholm, Skärgårdsstiftelsen, and Stockholm Archipelago now gaining international recognition. Persistence pays off, says Daniel Chilla, Film Commissioner, Film Stockholm.

Film productions also strengthen the local economy during the off-season.

– For us as landowners in the archipelago, the film initiative means that our entrepreneurs generate revenue during seasons when restaurants and accommodation would otherwise stand empty. And through the films, we draw more people to discover this unique place, says Ulrika Palmblad-Wennergren, Head of Development, Skärgårdsstiftelsen.

Stockholm Business Region works to strengthen Stockholm’s position internationally, as a city where the pulse of a capital city and 30,000 islands exist side by side. The nomination in Cannes is yet another example of how that combination draws international attention. It is also at the heart of Stockholm Business Region’s international brand campaign Stockholm 30 014 Islands of Possibilities – which highlights the archipelago’s unique proximity to the city as one of Stockholm’s most important competitive advantages.
