Stockholm has been named the top-ranking Nordic city in the newly released Global Cities Index 2024 by Oxford Economics, placing 14th globally and fourth in Europe. The index evaluates 1000 of the world’s largest cities across five key dimensions: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance.

In a standout achievement, Stockholm is one of only five cities worldwide to rank in the top 100 across all five categories, highlighting the city’s unique ability to combine sustainable growth with a high quality of life.

Stockholm is a global role model for sustainable growth,” says Staffan Ingvarsson, CEO of Stockholm Business Region. “We combine economic strength and human capital with quality of life, openness, and environmental responsibility. Ranking among the top cities in every category proves that our model is internationally competitive.

Stockholm’s strengths highlighted in the index include:

  • A resilient, diversified economy
  • High levels of education and access to global talent
  • Excellent air quality and low emissions
  • Strong civil liberties and political stability
  • One of the youngest age profiles in Western Europe

The Global Cities Index 2024 reflects the growing global recognition of Stockholm as a future-ready city that attracts people and businesses seeking not only economic opportunity, but also a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable urban environment.

Meanwhile, the report highlights the housing market as a strategic challenge. High demand and long waiting times are forcing many people into an uncertain secondary rental market. Still, Stockholm ranks among the top ten percent of cities even in this category.

“There are challenges, especially when it comes to housing. But the fact that our ‘weakest’ category is still among the world’s best shows the strength of Stockholm’s foundation. Now it’s about investing wisely in the future and continuing to build a city where people and businesses want to be,” says Staffan Ingvarsson.
